Apple Moving LCDs to LED Technology?
That’s looking very likely, according to Think Secret. Rumors are floating that production of Apple portables with LED LCDs could begin in the second quarter, with the MacBook and 15-inch MacBook Pro likely to be the first models to see the new technology. There are currently only two portables using LED LCDs, one from Sony and one from Fujitsu, despite the advantages of greater brightness, color consistency, power conservation, and thinness. Prices are about double that of conventional LCDs, even on a 13-inch display–with larger displays costing even more of a premium–and scaling up LED LCDs to larger sizes–like those found on the iMac, 17-inch MBP or Apple’s Cinema Displays–has proven difficult. As prices fall and the technology matures, the benefits are going to be fantastic.
