World of Warcraft and other games on your iPhone?

We gave it some thought, but after much deliberation have decided that the rumor is too big to ignore–World of Warcraft is alleged to be coming to the iPhone. A low-resolution version of the game suitable for the limited storage capacity and processing power of the iPhone is purported to be in the works, and will be playable via wifi or EDGE, according to iPhone World. In fact, the video iPod is also rumored to be receiving World of Warcraft.

Now, there has been talk of Apple taking a greater interest in gaming recently, but we’re still quite skeptical that they have something in the works for non-casual gamers. Any version of World of Warcraft that could run acceptably on the iPhone hardware would have to be massively stripped down graphically, and it goes without saying that controlling such a complicated game with an iPhone interface would be challenging. As some have suggested, a more reasonable idea might be letting WoW players do certain things in the game via their iPhone–such as shopping–but a World of Warcraft Lite is probably too much to hope for.

Of course, we wouldn’t complain if Apple proved us wrong on this one, as it could be a massive selling point for hardcore gamers. More likely, though, we’ll have to settle for games targeted at the more casual player, as Apple is in talks with EA Mobile–who did several of the games found on the iPod–to do iPhone games
