15-inch MacBook on the way? Unlikely

By now, you’ve likely read at one site or another that a publication is spreading the rumor of a 15-inch MacBook to bridge the gap between the current MacBooks and the low-end MacBook Pro.

DigiTimes, the publication in question, isn’t exactly known for its accuracy, with a string of inaccurate rumors related to Apple in recent years. Even from a more reputable source, we’d find this rumor very hard to believe.

If anything, people have been clamoring for a smaller portable from Apple in the ultralight range. Although the $500 price difference between the most expensive MacBook and the most inexpensive MacBook Pro makes an intermediate model possible without completely cannibalizing sales, the performance difference between the two models is negligible. Clockspeeds are very close, while RAM, HD, and optical drive are the same. The only real difference is graphics card and screen size. Model differentiation would thus be quite difficult. That said, we’re always game for more product options, so if they want to prove us wrong, they can go right ahead!
