SuperDrive upgrades available from OWC

We haven’t seen any press release from Other World Computing on this, but the Mac Observer is reporting it, and they’re a trustworthy bunch, so we’ll take their word for it. Of particular interest to us is the availability of SuperDrive upgrades for the Titanium and Aluminum PowerBooks (in all sizes) and the iBook G4. The OWC PR reportedly said:

Whether upgrading from a read-only drive, replacing an older Superdrive, or for additional optical drives, OWC’s options are priced right and plug n’ play easy to install. OWC offers the newest, fastest, and quietest SuperDrive technology from Pioneer, including 16X DL SuperDrive DVR 111D to read and write DVDs, CDs, and Dual-Layer DVDs with an up to 8.5GB capacity per DVD Dual Layer disc at speeds of 8X; Up to 4.7GB capacity per DVD at 16X; and CDs of up to 700MB at 40X.”

Prices start at $70 for PowerBook SuperDrive upgrades and $80 for iBook SuperDrive upgrades. If you turn in your old optical drive, a discount of as much as $40 can be received. The SuperDrives are available now, and if you aren’t up to cracking open your own PowerBook or iBook–optical drive installations are not for the faint-hearted–contact OWC and they’ll give you the lowdown on having them install it for you. OWC’s SuperDrive page has all the info.
