Analyst expects iPhone success to surprise
MacNN has obtained some interesting information offering the insight of an analyst from Morgan Stanley on predicting iPhone sales. The core of the story is this:
Apple’s iPhone could surprise industry watchers by selling 8 million units in 2007 following its launch in June, according to research firm Morgan Stanley. The firm raised its iPhone estimates by 33 percent from 6 million to 8 million based on a survey, which found that more people are interested in purchasing an iPhone than the combined number of people who already own or are planning to purchase a similar high-end device.”
If Apple can sell 8 million iPhones in 2007, one thing that will be worth watching is how many of those purchasers are current Cingular customers and how many are new customers attracted by Apple. Cingular has around 61 million subscribers currently, and while we’re not sure how that breaks down in terms of families or subscribers with multiple lines and handsets, the idea of more than an eighth of Cingular subscribers sporting an iPhone is awful impressive.
