iSync increases phone support

We were just cruising the ZDNet blogs when we came along this entry from our old friend Marc Orchant, alerting us to the fact that in the flurry of software updates from Apple last week, one thing that might have flown under the radar is support for more phones with iSync. Checking Apple’s list of supported devices, we noticed newly-added support for some of our phones, but what, no iPhone on the list? What is this, 1998? Get with the program, Apple.

  1. Actually Jobs demonstrated at the keynote that the iPhone will sync through iTunes- like an iPod, so we will never be seeing it on the iSync list

  2. My Nokia E61 is not recognized when connected via USB. I’ve been syncing it via Bluetooth for months after modifying iSync’s MetaClasses.plist. The first sync after installing 10.4.9 [iSync Version 2.4 (501.2)] failed, the second synced all my contacts and calendar entries with many conflicts. After resolving all the conflicts, the 3rd attempt to sync failed. I quit iSync and restarted my phone. Restarting iSync has it stuck while refreshing contact and calendar information and unable to connect to my phone. There is no bluetooth activity from what I can see.

I’ve trashed iSync’s plist but that made no difference. I’m not sure where to look now, but am guessing that I have to undo the mods to iSync’s MetaClasses.plist, and probably reinstall the 10.4.9 combo updater.

    Any other thoughts?

  3. UPDATE:

I left iSync refreshing contact and calendar info. When I got back to it about 5 hours later, it had sorted itself out and had a warning about conflicts and duplication. I quit iSync and removed all modifications that had been made to it previously to allow my E61 to sync.

I was now able to sync again!. I had some calendar events duplicated, but it didn’t take long to clean up. With further experimentation, I have found that one can sync a phone via Bluetooth _OR_ USB, but not both. So choose carefully when you first set-up a phone in iSync. the interface you choose is the one you will be limited to.
