iPhone tagged as source of flash price increase

For the second time in 2007, prices for NAND flash memory went up this month, with contract prices increasing 4-7 percent, according to ExtremeTech. While Apple isn’t exactly the only company using flash memory these days, it is suspected that the iPhone is responsible for encouraging other companies to produce phones using NAND flash memory, creating a significant net price increase:

Apple’s iPhone in particular is thought to be playing a large role in the NAND flash memory market this year (especially in the 4- and 8-Gbyte range) because many major phone makers are trying to create phones to compete with the device, according to DRAMeXchange.

Let’s hope no one suggests to Apple that a $700 and $800 iPhone would be a good idea to combat these price increases.
