Still hope for third-party iPhone apps?

The eagle-eyed staff at MacRumors noted an interesting anecdote: Apple is still trying to decide on third-party iPhone apps. The perception of the iPhone as a closed device has been a point of contention since the announcement of the device, and there are doubtless many third-party developers who would love to get a piece of the iPhone pie. Our best guess is that there’s at least some sort of opportunity to develop for the iPhone, but that Apple will likely keep a close eye on third-party applications to maintain a high level of quality and preserve the iPhone experience.
