Sixteen days after its introduction, Apple finally knows what to call the iPhone–only after it sold a million plus copies.

When Apple’s latest iteration of its revolutionary smartphone debuted on June 8th, much of Apple’s marketing materials formally titled the device the “iPhone 3G S” and some materials called it the “iPhone 3GS.” Much of the confusion was caused by Apple’s stylistic decision to create a logo for the iPhone that separates the “S” somewhat:

So you can see how some poor staffer in Apple’s branding department had some trouble deciding how to render that in text format without the logo. Over the past 16 days, Apple’s materials have reflected both 3G S and 3GS throughout their website etc.

But over the past 48 hours, Apple has consolidated its materials around one version of the nomenclature: iPhone 3GS. Below, at left, is a screenshot of Google’s cache taken on June 23rd of the bottom left corner of Apple.com/iPhone and the right is a screenshot of how it appears now:

So there you have it. We couldn’t find a single iteration of “3G S” anywhere on Apple’s website, so we imagine it’s gone for good. And we’ve gotta say–we prefer 3GS–it just looks better.
