Apple captures 2% of unit handset sales in just two years–but gobbles 32% of handset profits…that’s kind of the way Apple rolls

In just two short years, Apple has claimed a whopping 2% of mobile handset sales worldwide. Not very good right? Well, it’s good enough for fifth place, actually.

But let’s blow your mind: those 2% of units sold account for 8% of overall sales revenue for handsets. So Apple’s gone from zero dollars in handset revenue to 8 of every $100 sold in two years.

It doesn’t stop there: Apple’s making so much profit per iPhone sold that it is banking 32% of worldwide handset profits according to this analysis by All Things Digital. We don’t have much to add except to say that 1) the iPhone’s great and Apple deserves it and 2) we’ve seen this story before with Apple’s high margins on the iPod, MacBook, iMac and on and on. Apple just doesn’t put itself in a position to sell a product it can’t make and sell for a 30%+ profit margin.
