Brenthaven, known for higher-end notebook sleeves and cases, is now offering something for the MacBook owner on a budget. Macworld has a nice write-up on Brenthaven’s MacBook Sleeve, which for $20 offers Brenthaven’s typical level of protection, but without all the frills. The sleeve was originally made for large laptop programs in schools, so for $20, you can get kid-tested durability.

Those espionage-experts at MacRumors have come into a very interesting document: AT&T’s training guide for iPhone sales.
If you’ve never seen one of these sales training guides–regardless of phone model–they’re rather interesting. In this case, the iPhone is broken down by features, then includes questions for the salesperson to ask the prospective customer and counter-arguments to sell them on the product. While many of the features are already known, there’s still some interesting clarification of functionality..

We aren’t sure if this has spread across the entire Cingular/AT&T network, but for those of you wondering when your phones would start displaying the AT&T moniker instead of Cingular, it looks like the switchover is happening now. We have multiple reports of Cingular customers whose phones are now saying AT&T instead. That smell in the air means we’re getting real close to the iPhone.

A source which Gizmodo says is reliable has posted an iPhone hands-on, which they’ve posted on the site. Some of the details offered:
- The display is said to be very good
- Response time is said to be speedy
- Web browsing is fast
The tipster does say that the iPhone is too bulky to use without a pouch and the battery doesn’t look like it’s the type to be easily replaced by a user. Perhaps most intriguingly, there is a reference to a “super top secret feature,” which is certainly exciting.
Just to be clear, we don’t know this source’s track record, and Gizmodo has been a bit–uh–spotty lately, but they say this guy knows his stuff, and the only thing that comes as much of a surprise at all is the battery, which recent rumors had suggested would be serviceable by the user.

If you’ve been sweating how many old women you’ll have to trample to get an iPhone on June 29, BusinessWeek has an interesting rumor in a recent article:
In units built and shipped, the iPhone launch will dwarf anything Apple has attempted. It plans to have 3 million iPhones ready for sale on June 29, two sources say. (Apple won’t comment.)
Considering that a lot of analysts expected Apple to sell 3 million iPhones in all of 2007, it’s going to be exciting to see who was too optimistic or pessimistic in their sales expectations. We wouldn’t be surprised to see Apple clear out that many iPhones pretty quick, though.

Our buddies over at Bare Feats are their usual lightning-fast selves with brand new MacBook Pro gaming benchmarks. Pitting the just-updated MBPs against the last revision, as well as other models of Mac, you can see how the new MacBook Pros handle Quake 4, Doom 3, Halo, and more. Here’s an excerpt:
The new MacBook Pro with the GeForce 8600M runs 3D accelerated games significantly faster than the previous 2.33GHz model with the Mobility Radeon X1600. For example, Quake 4 ran 60% faster, Prey 55% faster, and Doom 3 ran 38% faster. The “Rosa” even beat the 4-Core Mac Pro desktop with a GeForce 7300 GT in 4 out of 5 of our tests.
Looks like the faster FSB, clockspeed, and graphics card are making for quite a portable gaming champ.

For the past several months I’ve had two products from Waterfield Designs in my possession, lusting to be reviewed by this humble writer. The benefit of waiting too long to sit down and review a product is that you actually end up using it. The two items in question are both the large and small iPod Gear Pouch. The first thing you notice about the pouches is their size. When one visualizes an “iPod case”, you’d likely picture something form-fitting and snug - not the 10” x 5.3”x 1.0” the large pouch comes in at. This, as I discovered, was not a drawback or fault in the design of the pouch.

For all the griping about no 3G iPhone, it looks like AT&T is doing what it can to make the wireless experience with the iPhone a good one. Gizmodo has caught wind of a rumor at AT&T that the carrier is working on a project called “Fine Edge” to make the most of the EDGE technology utilized by the network.
The project has been going on for as many as six weeks, and is expected to to continue until June 15. Included in the efforts are improvements to EDGE latency, throughput, and coverage, according to Gizmodo. The hope is to get a minimum performance of 80kbps, which certainly isn’t too speedy to those of us accustomed to broadband, but is a significant improvement over the current state of EDGE in many parts of the country.

If you’ve been holding off on a new MacBook or MacBook Pro purchase, hoping for something a little more substantial than the underwhelming bump given the MacBook line recently, then you’re in luck. In line with recent rumors, Apple has updated the MacBook Pro lineup in a big way.
The big news is that the new MacBook Pros are the first Macs to use Intel’s latest Santa Rosa platform, meaning higher clockspeeds without the battery concerns. The 15-inch model now uses LCDs that are backlit with LEDs and are mercury-free, meaning we have a happier, more evenly-lit environment with less power consumption. The 17-inch model still uses a conventional LCD, but is available with an optional 1920×1200 resolution–30-percent increase–for $100. Here are the rest of the model specifics:
15-inch, $1999: 2.2GHz Core2Duo, 2GB RAM, 120GB HD, and GeForce 8600M GT 128MB
15-inch, $2499: 2.4GHz Core2Duo, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, and GeForce 8600M GT 256MB
17-inch, $2799: 2.4GHz Core2Duo, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, and GeForce 8600M GT 256MB
With Santa Rosa, the GeForce 8600M GT, and options like the high-resolution display, 250GB hard drives, and 4GB of RAM, you can configure a pretty ridiculously badass notebook with these new MacBook Pros. They’re available immediately, so go forth and purchase.

Well, it seems it doesn’t matter where you look: new MacBooks Pros should be here shortly, possibly as soon as Tuesday.
The new models are believed to take advantage of Intel’s latest platform, Santa Rosa, as well as make use of LED-backlit LCD technology. Whether we’ll see improvements in storage, RAM, or graphics card remains to be seen, but it’s already looking like a more substantial update than the MacBook’s recent bump.
